OVC newcomer of the week female

Torre Thomas, a 5-8 guard, from Fayette, Tenn., was named the Ohio Valley Conference's Newcomer of the Week. The UTM junior joined the Skyhawk program from Southwestern Community College in Memphis.

Thomas was named the league's top newcomer because she posted a 57.1 field goal shooting percentage in the Skyhawk's two games this past week. The junior guard hit three-of-five field goals, including her only three-point attempt, for seven points at Eastern Kentucky University. The Skyhawks posted an 88-80 victory over EKU.

She went five-for-nine from the floor with a trey and a foul shot against host Morehead State Monday night. She finished the contest with 12 points as the Skyhawks suffered a 79-65 setback.

Thomas grabbed seven rebounds in the two games to go with five steals, two assists and two blocked shots. Thomas, a criminal justice major, is the daughter of Nelee Lester and Elvis Thomas.

Just this past week, Tennessee-Martin's Amy Watson was named the OVC's Co-Player of the Week. Watson's honor was her second of the season. Freshman Keva Robinson also earned the league's Freshman Player of the Week earlier this season.

The Skyhawks are 8-7 in the OVC and will close out their regular season home schedule Saturday afternoon against Murray State. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.

A Tennessee-Martin victory combined with a Morehead State loss at Austin Peay will secure a first-round OVC tournament home game for the Skyhawks
