Open-mic night finds new home at Java Cafe Central

Usually, the campus open-mic night is held at the university game room. But recent renovations have halted the usual Tuesday night activity.

That’s where the Java House Café comes into play. Jared Powelson, a regular at the open mic night sponsored by SAC, decided to find a new location for the weekly event.

Powelson went to the SAC Executive Board to decide on a new location.

He brought up the idea of having the open mic night at the “trendy” Java House Café.

Powelson received an over-abundance of support from the SAC Executive Board.

They decided to offer some incentive to students also. With a UTM student I.D., they will receive a free cup of coffee, compliments of the SAC.

With the go ahead and support from the SAC, Powelson went to Mike Day, owner of the Java House Café.

Day was very willing to have the UTM open mic night. “If the Java House Café open mic night goes over well, there is a good possibility that it could happen here every Tuesday night,” said Powelson.

At the open mic nights, people can do just about anything they wish. They can sing, do poetry, comedy or just about any type of public performance that they want.

“SAC is always trying their best to get students involved with campus activities. This is a great way to tie in UTM students with the local Martin businesses. Plus, who can pass up a free cup of Java House coffee!?,” said Co-chairman for Publicity for SAC, Jenny Nicks.

Open mic nights are anything but new to the Java House Café. They originally started having open mic nights on Fridays from 9 p.m. to midnight.

Due to the success of the Friday event, Java House started to hold open mic nights on Wednesday’s and every other Saturday of each month.
