One man play in tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr.

The UTM office of Student Life and Student Activities Council present performer Barry Scott in Ain’t Got Long to Stay Here, a one-man play and tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.

The show, based on the speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is set for 7 p.m., Wed., Jan. 22, in the Boling University Center’s Watkins Auditorium. The performance is free and open to the public.

An authority on the life and works of King, Scott created his tribute to teach a generation of students about one of America’s most violent and inspiring times, and about the man who literally changed the entire nation.

Scott, a Nashville native, graduated from TSU with a degree in speech communications and theatre.

He is the founder and artistic director of The American Negro Playwright Theatre in Nashville, and is widely known for his successes as an actor, producer, director, motivational speaker and voice over artist.

In 1994, Scott performed excerpts of King’s speeches for the Humanitarian Awards Ceremony honoring President Jimmy Carter.

He also performed the I Have a Dream and I’ve Been to the Mountaintop speeches on the March On album benefiting the National Civil Rights Museum.

Scott has recreated King’s speeches in prominent venues including the Beacon Theater in New York, the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis and the Edmund Pettis Bridge in Selma.

He is a member of the Nashville Entertainment Association, the Nashville Film and Video Association, the NAACP, the Advisory Council of the Tennessee Arts Commission, and serves on the board of the Nashville Film Advisory Commission and Nashville Public Television.

“In October, I had the opportunity to see Mr. Scott’s performance along with the leadership of the SAC,” said Nichole Bennington, SAC Chairperson of Arts, News and Views committee. “We were touched and moved by his dynamic portrayal of Dr. King. It was truly a captivating presentation. It is our sincere hope that you will consider attending the performance and also encourage others to attend.”
