Office of Student Life moves to Alumni Gymnasium

Familiar faces no longer in Administration Building

The Office of Student Life has a new home – what was formerly known as the Alumni Gym or the old football building, and what will now be known as the Student Life Center.

David Belote, Louis Ragsdale, Charleen Thornton, the graphic design staff and other student workers who make up the Office of Student Life previously resided in Student Affairs on the second floor of the Administration Building.

The Student Life Center will house all activities that deal with Student Life, and will also serve as an event venue, said Belote, who is the director of the center and assistant vice chancellor for Student Affairs.

The center will house the Office of Student Organizations and Greek Life, PEP, IFC, Panhellenic and National PanHellenic Council, along with SAC, the Leaders in Residence program, special event programming, the Freshman Experience Program, the Emerging Leaders Program and selected Campus Recreation intramural activities.

“Students will also have all the room they need right in the main headquarters,” Belote said. “This new change brings about all kinds of advantages. With Student Life overflowing with storage from Greeks, student organizations and SAC, a major advantage of this new facility is the space. It is something that the Office of Student Life has needed for quite some time because student life is such a vital and main part of the campus.

SAC and student organizations will also have spaces available as well as storage.

“Storage is a great asset,” said Ragsdale, coordinator of Greek Life and student organizations. “I believe the new facility will add to opportunities to all the organizations that make up student life at UTM. If you haven’t been able to visit this wonderful new addition to the campus, you should definitely check it out.”

Belote said the center will host an open house once renovations to the building are complete. He added that the center will also provide student groups a place to practice for such events as All Sing and Step Show, as well as meet for late-night activities. The facility can seat up to 800.
