Note to smokers - please stop with teh smoke clouds on campus

You see it everyday - clouds and clouds of smoke. The smokers in front of Gooch, Sociology, Brehm, and Humanities are clouding our view. Since they’re killing us daily, one would think they’d at least be considerate. For instance, when I was walking in the Sociology building for class at 9 a.m. in the morning, a group of people were just puffing away and would not move from the entrance of the door. With the smoke clouds, it was difficult to see my way to the door. Of course, no one was kind enough to move out of the way. Some students here have bronchitis, asthma, sinusitis, and allergy problems. Those students, when they come through the smoke, are overwhelmed with coughing because they inhaled cigarette smoke and also have the pleasure of smelling like smoke, which I hear is a great fragrance. Health note: consistent use of tobacco causes cancer of the throat, mouth, and esophagus. Also, tobacco use cause chronic bronchitis and lung disease and emphysema which can be fatal. Our school policy for smokers is no smoking in the corridors and lobby areas (with no smoking sign). You know that this means no smoking in front of entrance ways and blocking entrances which are also fire hazards. I propose a solution to you smokers. Instead of standing directly in front of entrance ways where students usually walk, move where there is less traffic (on the sides of buildings or the appointed smoking areas, definitely away from entrances). Other students and I don’t want to ride “Puffy the Smoke Carpet” to class anymore. Marqueta Abraham is a sophomore Biology/Pre-Medicine major from Memphis.
