Music department offers evening of woodwind music concert Thursday


Students from the woodwind studios of Dr. Elaine Harriss and Michael Walsh at the UTM will present a special program of chamber music at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 27 in the Watkins Auditorium.

The 10-member UTM Flute Choir, directed by Dr. Harriss, will present several numbers including Tico, Tico, a popular Brazilian song; Simple Gifts, awell-known Shaker tune; School Days, a popular song from the early 1900s; the hymn My Shepherd Will Supply My Need; and the Bach Air from the Suite in D.

The flute choir will be assisted by David Sinclair on drums, Bryan Wolski on guitar, Gary Nichols on bass and Craig Smith on string bass.

In addition, a select high school flute trio will perform a piece by James Hook.

A clarinet quartet and a saxophone ensemble under the leadership of Mr. Walsh will also present several selections. The clarinetists will perform Divertimento by Hovahness and an arrangement of Joplin’s Easy Winners Rag.

The saxophone ensemble will perform two of Gershwin’s Preludes and an 18th century trio attributed to Rozelli. Musicians include UTM music students, majors from other fields, and talented high school students from the area. There is no admission charge and the public is cordially invited to attend.
