Murray State’s Anderson retires

Murray State’s head basketball coach Tevester Anderson announced Sunday afternoon that he is retiring as head coach of the Racers.

Anderson issued the following statement Sunday evening: "I have informed MSU president Dr. F. King Alexander and my players that I am retiring as head basketball coach at Murray State University, effective immediately.

"I have worked hard to recruit kids that are good people as well as good players.

"I want to thank former MSU president Dr. Kern Alexander for giving me the opportunity to be the head coach at Murray State. And, I want to thank the fans for their support. Murray State will always occupy a special place in my heart. Go Racers." In five seasons at MSU, Anderson compiled a 103-52 record and led the Racers to two Ohio Valley Conference championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances.

In his first season at MSU in 1998-99, Anderson won OVC Co-Coach of the Year honors and was named NABC District 7 Coach of the Year for guiding the Racers to a 27-6 record and an OVC title.

Anderson came to MSU in 1995 as an assistant coach under Mark Gottfried, a position he held for three seasons until Gottfried left to become the head coach at the University of Alabama.

Anderson was named the school's 12th head basketball coach on March 27,1998.

Prior to coming to Murray State, Anderson was an assistant at the University of Georgia (1986-95) and Auburn University (1980-86).

Before entering the college ranks, Anderson was a head basketball coach at Canton (Miss.) High School and West Fulton (Ga.) High School, winning a pair of state titles at each school, making up for a career that any coach would want.

Congratulations on a wonderful and heart felt career, and good luck!
