Men’s tennis gets hold of 1st OVC win, women defeat EIU Panthers


The Tennessee-Martin men claimed their first Ohio Valley Conference tennis win of the season Thursday afternoon by defeating visiting Austin Peay, 5-2.

Among the Skyhawk winners in singles action were Gustavo Anzola, Daniel McGuire, Adolfo Anzola and Lucas Tregansin.

The Skyhawks picked up the doubles point as the teams of Gustavo Anzola and Adolfo Anzola defeated Joao Pinho and Rodrigo Borges, 8-4, and Oltion Mollaymeri and Daniel McGuire knocked off Andrew Naidu and Wesleigh Pancho, 8-2.

The Tennessee-Martin tennis teams earned a split against Ohio Valley Conference host Eastern Illinois this past weekend. The Skyhawk women defeated Eastern Illinois 5-2, while the Skyhawk men fell to EIU, 6-1.

The Skyhawk tennis teams return to action Friday afternoon when they host Alabama A&M at Skyhawk Tennis Complex. Action gets under way at 2 p.m.

In women's action against Eastern Illinois, The Skyhawks (4-1/7-4) dropped the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches.

However, the Skyhawk women claimed victories at No. 3 singles where Sari Nortje defeated Madina Mambetova, 7-5, 6-1.

Katrina Domela picked up a win at No. 4 singles by defeating Amber Lenfert 6-1, 6-2.

Gayatri Ramesh won at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-1 and Ana Bakran won at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles action, the Skyhawks claimed two of the three matches to win the point. Bakran and Elly Shearman teamed up to beat Mambetova and Constanza Comacho, 8-2.

Ramesh and Jeanne de Wet won the No. 3 doubles match for the Skyhawks, defeating Lenfert and Jill Wirtz, 8-3.

In men's action, the lone Skyhawk win came in the No. 6 singles match where Ben Hatchwell defeated Colin Priestner, 6-1, 6-3.

Daniel McGuire was forced into tiebreakers in his two sets against EIU's Bandon Blankenbaker at No. 2 singles. Blankenbaker won by sets, 7-6, 7-6.

The Skyhawk men are 1-4 in the OVC and 3-11 overall. Both teams return to action April 2, against Alabama A&M..
