Martin to speak at career day March 6

Cary Martin, an Emmy-winning news anchor for Little Rock's KATV Channel 7 News and 1989 University of Tennessee at Martin graduate, will serve as the keynote speaker for the 2003 Communications Career Day Awards and Recognition Banquet at UT Martin.

The banquet, set for 5 p.m., Thursday, March 6 in the Boling University Center's Duncan Ballroom on the UT Martin campus, is one of several events planned for Communications Career Day 2003. Communications Career Day is an annual event designed to bridge the gap between the university and the communications professions. The day's activities are open to the public.

Cary, a native of Centerville, Tenn., joined KATV in January 2000, where he co-anchors Channel 7 News at 6 and 10 p.m. Cary quickly became known as the man who underwent LASIK eye surgery live on the air, reporting on the doctor's progress throughout the newscast.

This story was nominated for an Emmy less than a month later, and his work that spring was nominated for three regional Emmy awards including Health Reporting and Best Anchor. His work also earned him awards from the Associated Press and the Society of Professional Journalists.

Cary earned his bachelor's degree in communications at UT Martin, where he was selected as one of the top 15 broadcasting students in the country. This honor won him an internship position at the networks in New York City with the International Radio and Television Society.

Cary began his professional broadcasting career at WBBJ in Jackson, Tenn. He has also held positions at WAFF in Huntsville, Ala.; KVOA in Tucson, Ariz.; WCMH in Columbus, Ohio; and WKRC in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Banquet tickets will be on sale at the Boling University Center Information Desk for $9 through Feb. 27.

The banquet highlights the annual career day and fair, which gets under way at 9:30 a.m. with registration for high school and community college students. The general session and high school awards ceremony begins at 10 a.m. in the Boling University Center's Watkins Auditorium. Tours of the communications department facilities will be available at 10:30 a.m.

The career fair begins at noon in the Boling University Center. Participants are invited to visit with communications professionals in the areas of broadcasting, news-editorial and public relations.

Broadcasting professionals will meet in Room 206A, while news-editorial professionals will meet in Room 206B.

Public relations professionals will meet in Room 206C. The career fair will close at 2 p.m.

Communications Career Day was originally called Media Day. The new name and format for the program were introduced in 1998. The first Media Day was held in 1987.
