Man killed in hostage standoff at Dyersburg State

The Associated Press reports that a gunman who had taken at least 15 Dyersburg State Community College students hostage was killed by police late Wednesday night.

Two others were injured in the gunfire, but it remains unclear which shots injured the victims.

The man, Harold Kilpatrick, Jr., identified himself as a member of the al Qaeda terrorist network. However, the FBI has no evidence to support that claim.

Police say that the standoff began around 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon when the suspect entered a second floor classroom in the Eller building.

The suspect later released four of the hostages, and even ordered pizza and soft drinks to share with the hostages.

A relative says that the suspect had either not taken or unable to take medication for depression.
