Lott wins student-employee award

At a recent Academic Speaker Series event, Jesse Lott was awarded the Fall 2005 Beth Maloan Outstanding UT Martin Student Employee Award.

Lott, a senior chemistry major with a 3.30 GPA has worked in the Margaret N. Perry Children’s Center for the past year where he now holds an assistant position. In addition to a plaque, he received a $500 cash award.

Lott stays involved in campus clubs and plays intramural sports in addition to working at the learning center.

Lott’s duties at the Children’s Center range from assisting the director in the office, to teaching in the preschool class, to filing and answering the phone, to posting fees and charges in the system and handling work-study time sheets. Also, Lott writes the monthly newsletter for the Children’s Center, enabling the center to maintain a three-star rating in day care standards.

“His quality work and conscientious efforts have proven especially valuable to the Children’s Center in this area,” said Leanne Snider, Lott’s supervisor.

Lott’s responsibilities in the classroom include supervising children from ages 3 to 5, implementing activities for them, and working with parents.

The award is named for Beth Maloan, former director of budgeting and payroll. During her time as director, Maloan co-chaired a study group to enhance student employment and led the group to establish the Outstanding Student Employee Award. When she died of cancer in April 2001, the Beth Maloan Outstanding UTM Student Employee Award was established.

Members of the Maloan family were present at the award ceremony. Jennifer Maloan Stroh and he husband Brian presented the award. The award is given each fall and spring semester to a student who exhibits excellence in academic performance and who demonstrates a strong work ethic and a commitment to the university.

If you are interested in contributing to the scholarship award may be made through payroll deduction for employees or by sending a contribution to the Office of Development at UTM.
