Interviews for new head UTM Football coach have begun

Interviews for the head football coach position at the University of Tennessee at Martin will begin Monday, Dec. 2, when the first of four candidates will be on campus.

The four candidates include Matt Griffin, offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Maine; Paul Randolph, defensive line coach at West Virginia University, 10-year veteran of the Canadian Football League and two-time All Gulf South Conference linebacker at UT Martin; Ron Roberts, assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Tusculum College and a member of the 1988 and 1989 UT Martin Gulf South Conference teams; and Charlie Stubbs, former UT Martin assistant coach and most recently quarterback coach and passing coordinator at the University of Alabama.

“This is not necessarily the final list of candidates that we will interview for this job,” said Phil Dane, UT Martin athletics director. “This is where we are starting.”

Dane is working with an advisory search committee to hire a new football coach. The advisory committee includes Dr. Nell Gullett, professor of finance and faculty athletics representative; Mike Jinkins, president of the Skyhawk Club and former UT Martin football player; William Campbell, UT Martin admissions counselor and former UT Martin football player; and current UT Martin football players John Gray, a junior defensive end from Danville, Ky.; and Lee Lawrence, a junior offensive lineman from Gleason, Tenn.

"I really appreciate the involvement of the committee in this process, and I appreciate their support for interviewing these candidates,” Dane said.

Randolph will be on campus Monday, Dec. 2. Stubbs will interview Tuesday, Dec. 3, while Griffin is scheduled to interview on campus Friday, Dec. 6. Roberts’ interview date has not been determined yet. The interview will be either Dec. 4 or Dec. 11.

There will be an opportunity for members of the community to meet each of the candidates.

Open forums for Randolph, Roberts and Stubbs will be at noon on their respective interview dates. An open forum for Griffin will be at 7:30 a.m., Dec. 6. All open forums will be in the Boling University Center’s Room 206A.

“I think we have four strong candidates who have helped developed winning programs, and they all have historical ties to UT Martin,” Dane said.

The head football coach position at UT Martin became vacant when Sam McCorkle was dismissed Oct. 31.
