IFC prepares for spring recruitment

IFC Spring Recruitment is next week, Feb. 9-12. The Inter Fraternal Council (IFC) has been preparing for this week since last semester by hosting a pizza party and informative meeting in the UC. IFC has held four informative meetings to answer questions of those interested in going through recruitment. Two of those meetings were held this past week.

According to IFC President Matt Sturdivant, “The council has been very productive in publicizing Spring Recruitment. From the informative meetings in the Watkins Auditorium, information booths outside the cafeteria, and posting fliers, IFC is spreading the word around campus.”

The council also believes that the publicity of Greekfest being held the week before recruitment is an advantage to help spread the news. Recruitment dates are scheduled to be announced at all Greek competitons.

In the past, Spring Recruitment's numbers have been considerably low, but the question of why is on the minds of many. “I believe that many students who want to go Greek wait until the fall semester,” said Sturdivant.

"Applications for recruitment come in very slowly during the spring semester; those accounted for so far, are currently about average. I expect the majority of the applications to come in right before recruitment begins next week,” said Louis Ragsdale, UTM Coordinator of Greek Life.

There is speculation that a low turn out of students not going through Spring Recruitment is due to the fact that the fraternities' GPAs have lowered. “I believe that bad publicity is partially to blame for a lower number of recruits during the spring,” said Sturdivant.

“Today, Greeks are made to look bad on television, movies, and other media, and for lowering GPA excuse, let it be known that four fraternities this past semester had GPAs that were higher than the all-male average. This may be the cause for lower numbers, but IFC feels positive about the upcoming week.”
