Help students paint Martin green; Donations to go to Greenway project

Paint Martin green Monday and Tuesday.. The 10 students in UT M's Leaders in Residence class are painting the town green by asking for donations to help fund the Brian Brown Memorial Greenway. The students will be going door-to-door Nov. 25-26 with green bows to give to Martin residents who donate at least $5. The bows can be attached to doors or mailboxes. Students will go to local businesses from 3-5 p.m. and to homes from 5-7 p.m. The greenway is being developed in memory of the late Brian Brown, the former director of Campus Recreation who was killed in a bicycling accident in July 1999. The greenway will incorporate and connect UT Martin, residential areas, the western business district, the downtown Historic District, the central business district, recreational parks and other areas in Martin. Few sidewalks currently exist that provide safe, accessible routes to these districts. The memorial greenway will provide a transportation route that is much safer, according to Tim Johnston, chairperson of the Brian Brown Greenway Foundation. It will also feature trails, recreation areas, points of interest, historic sites, waterways and natural habitats. Greenways also increase property values, Johnston said, adding that expenditures by residents increase because of the accessibility to different districts by students and the community members who would use the greenway as a transportation mode.
