Guess Who could have been a better remake

We all know it is important when a person decides to show off the one they truly love to their family. We also know that being in a relationship is one thing, but being in an interracial relationship can be somewhat difficult. Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher star in this humorous yet predictable film, which shows that even though parents may disagree with things that their children decide to do, they can learn to accept them in order for their children to be happy.

Guess Who is basically a reversed spin off of the movie Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967), which starred Sidney Poitier and Spencer Tracy. In the movie Guess Who, Simon Green, played by Ashton Kutcher, falls in love with Theresa Jones, played by Zoe Saldana, which causes an uproar at the office where Simon works.

Simon announces to his boss that he and his girlfriend have become engaged and due to fact that this is an interracial relationship, Simon’s boss doesn’t accept the whole idea at all. This leads to Simon quitting his successful job and having to explain to his fiancé that he quit and why.

Theresa feels as though she is ready for Simon to meet her family. Simon decides to hold off on telling her that he lost his job, because Theresa has already told her father Percy Jones, played by Bernie Mac, that Simon is extremely successful. Since Theresa hasn’t bothered to mention to her family that Simon is white, Simon is uptight about the whole situation.

Upon arrival at the Jones’ house, loan officer Percy Jones seems to think that the cab driver is Theresa’s love, but comes to a rude awakening when she points out Simon as the love of her life. From this point on, the humor begins because Percy does not like the overall idea of his daughter dating a white man. Percy Jones is the type of character that always thinks he is right and he only wants the absolute best for his daughter.

However, his wife Marilyn, played by Judith Scott, disagrees with him. Because of this, Theresa and Simon decide not to tell her parents about their engagement.

Percy finds out that Simon has been lying to his daughter by not telling her that he lost his job. This little piece of information causes Simon and Theresa to argue and split up.

Once Percy finds out the truth about why Simon quit his job, he helps Simon to win his daughter’s heart all over again and they makeup at Percy and Marilyn’s 25th Wedding Anniversary celebration.

Guess Who is directed by Kevin Rodney Sullivan with Columbia Pictures and was released on March 25, 2005.

Overall, I thought that this movie was humorous at times, but I also feel as though it could have been better. This movie shows that people can get over their ridiculous ways and except life for what it is. I am glad that this movie brings to our attention just how difficult being in an interracial relationship can be.
