Golfers turn in lowest rounds

UTM shot the lowest round of golf in the two-day Billiken Invitational at Gateway National in Madison, Ill., and finished eighth in the final regular season tournament before the Ohio Valley Conference championship later this month in Paducah, Ky.

“This was a good tournament for us to finish the regular season,” said UTM golf coach Jerry Carpenter. “It was a good confidence boost for us.”

The Skyhawk golfers shot a 308 in the first round and then turned in a 290 in the second round. The team closed out its invitational with a third-round 308 to finish with a three-round 906. Southern Illinois won the invitational with an 883 while Missouri-Kansas City was second with an 885. Marquette was third with an 887. Other Ohio Valley Conference teams in the invitational included Eastern Illinois, 5th with an 890; and Southeast Missouri State, 7th with a 902.

Carpenter said all the third-round scores were high because of 25-35 mile per hour winds.

Heath Prescott led the Skyhawk golfers with a three-round 223, while Zach Jaworski was second with a 224. Reise Kelly was third with a 226 and Scott Carpenter was fourth with a 233.

Kelly shot a one-under par 70 in the second round, while Prescott shot even par in the second round to lead the Skyhawks to the 290. Jaworski opened the tournament with a 76 and then shot three-over par in the second and final rounds of the Billiken Invitational.

Prescott’s 223 was enough to tie him for 19th in the invitational, while Jaworski finished tied for 22nd with a 224.

“We should be in good shape going into the conference championship,” Carpenter said. “We have a fund-raiser and then the championship.”

The Skyhawk golfers return to action in the Ohio Valley Conference Championship set for April 28-30 at Paducah (Ky.) Country Club.
