Golf team plays in two tournaments


The UTM golf team is tied for 15th after the first round of the Belmont Invitational at the Legends Club in Franklin. The Invitational continues today.

The Skyhawk golfers shot a 306 and are tied with Morehead State, 22 strokes behind Mercer University. Mercer, a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, shot a three-under par, 281. Florida Atlantic shot even-par while Jacksonville State carded a one-over 285. Austin Peay, a member of the Ohio Valley Conference is fourth in the invitational after the first round with a 287.

Freshman Reise Kelly leads the Skyhawk golfers with a three-over-par, 74. Kelly is currently tied for 35th after the first round. Clint Rochelle turned in first-round 76 and is tied for 50th. Heath Prescott and Scott Carpenter fired first-round 78s and are tied for 73rd. Zach Jaworski is a stroke back and tied for 83rd with a 79. The UTM Martin golf team finished tied for 17th with Western Carolina University in the Belmont Invitational. Both teams carded 904s for the three rounds played at the Legends Club in Franklin. Austin Peay won the 21-team tournament with an 852.

The Skyhawk golfers shot 306 in the first round and came back with a 300 and a 298 in the second and third rounds. Freshman Reise Kelly led the Skyhawk golfers with a 224. He shot a 74 and two 75s. He finished tied for 43rd in the tournament. Clint Rochelle finished tied for 55th in the tournament and was two strokes behind Kelly with a 226. Rochelle carded rounds of 76, 75 and 75.

Heath Prescott and Zach Jaworski shot 228s. Prescott shot 78, 76 and 74, while Jaworski turned in a 79, 75 and a 74. Scott Carpenter finished with a three-round 231. He shot rounds of 78, 75 and 78.

Matt Anderson of Florida Atlantic was the individual champion. He shot rounds of 67, 68 and 71 to finish with a seven-under par 206. Robert Dinwiddie of Tennessee State was second with a 207.
