Go to jail for a good cause

Greekfest 2004 starts off the week with fun, fundraising and competition.

If you were curious as to why your classmates were being "arrested" from class or campus work facilities on Monday, it's because they were raising money for a little girl with autism.

“What is your Freedom Worth?” was the theme of this year's second annual Jail-N-Bail. Jail-N-Bail is a part of the activities that takes place during Greekfest. This year, the proceeds benefited “Alyssa’s Ray of Hope.”

IFC, NPHC, and Panhellinic all joined together to be "arrested" for a common cause. A mock jail was created in the UC and 15 people from Greek organizations were taken from class by campus police officers, cuffed with plastic handcuffs, and taken in campus police cars to the UC to beg for bail money. Each chapter was asked to donate one dollar per member of his/her chapter.

Beth French of McKenzie said, "It was fun to be arrested from where I work and to ride in a cop car!" A total of $907.32 was raised with all proceeds going toward a total that will be tallied at the end of Greekfest. A check will be presented to the Ray family at the closing festivities of the Greek Banquet.

Event chair Elizabeth Vallet said, "This event was not only fun, but it turned out to be very successful. We are so thankful to everyone who participated!"
