Gallahger a smash at Jackson Civic Center

Who wouldn’t want to spend their evening being showered with humor, pureed watermelon and other fine foods?

The famous comedian Gallagher gave another one of his side-splitting performances last Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Carl Perkins Civic Center in Jackson. He is currently traveling the country on his “Wet and Wild Tour.” Unlike his previous shows, this tour allows members of the audience to come onstage and experience the ‘sledge-o-matic’ first hand.

The ‘sledge-o-matic’ is Gallagher’s trademark giant wooden mallet which he uses to smash everything from jugs of milk to marshmallows and creamed corn. Much of the audience, that gets drenched in food, is provided with plastic bags and brings their own rain gear to try to protect them from the wrath of his sledge hammer.

The “Wet and Wild Tour” includes a pre-show where Gallagher is more than happy to pose for photographs and sign autographs. A table is set up for purchasing t-shirts, memorabilia and his patented ‘Gallagher 2 BAKS Cap’. The 2 BAKS cap is a baseball cap that, as the name clearly depicts, has two backs instead of a bill.

Gallagher began the show Sunday by tossing candy into the audience as he walked to the stage. He proceeded to use a tennis racket to launch everything from miniature Reese’s cups to Chee-tos all the way to the back of the audience.

Before he receded backstage, he tossed a large beach ball into the audience which kept them occupied for the 10 minutes that it took him to prepare himself after his meet and greet.

Upon returning to the stage he joked about the war in Iraq. Throughout the show he made fun of audience members, joked lightly about gender, race, sex and sexual preference and told the audience why things are the way they are.

He tried to hook an 18 year-old guy, Brian, up with a girl, Caren, from the front row. They hula-hooped and rode around on Gallagher’s giant ‘Big Wheel’.

Then the audience enjoyed booing and cheering when Gallagher played a game of one-on-one with another guy named Wesley. They tossed cans and jars into a trash can across the stage.

Gallagher invited audience members to the stage to have birthday cakes smashed into their faces. For being good sports, they got to smash pies and even some of Gallagher’s famous watermelons.

With mayonnaise dripping from the ceiling, Gallagher and his stage guests finished up the show with a shower from water guns.

Though Gallagher is now 56 years old, he told the audience that he can’t retire because “the world’s never been more confused.” He described important decisions like “wiping yer ass” and explained that “a raccoon is the same as a rabbit; raccoons poop too.”

Before Sunday night, Gallagher had performed in Knoxville and Nashville. He proceeded on to Memphis after visiting “…some crazy-ass town in the south (Jackson).”
