Freshman Council elects officers

UTM's Freshman Council met Tuesday night to elect officers and discuss plans for its upcoming Homecoming events. Freshman Council will meet again on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 9 p.m. Four candidates ran for Chairman of the Freshman Council.

Jacob Crouch, Carin Malone, Josh Schenk and Kevin Teets ran for the top position with Teets coming out the victor.

“I’m thrilled to be given this honor, I had some tough competition. I’m really looking forward to this year,” said Teets.

“We, as a Freshman Council, are going to be looking to get everyone involved as we begin work on our plans for the year.”

Crouch spoke on the importance of being visible as a group representing the freshmen and also hit on the topics of voter registration and restaurant reform.

Carin Malone talked about her willingness to succeed and her experience in student government in high school.

Schenk based his platform on the council's by-laws and the need to finish the job of revising them. He also talked about his high school experience and what he is currently involved in at UTM.

Teets used one of his own personal rules as something to live by. "If you have a problem, you have two choices: Change IT or Change your attitude." Teets also hit on the council needing to do some "House Cleanup" and take care of its own problems before it can go out taking on others. He also spoke of needing to create a sense of belonging among the freshmen and being visible on campus.

Running for vice president was Jason Adkins, Deikeya Greer, Amy Hedstrom and DJ Norton. The vice presidential vote came out in a tie between Greer and Hedstrom, bringing the need for a run-off vote.

The run-off again ended in a tie, forcing the council to refer to the SGA Constitution. According to the constitution, in the case of a tie the president must cast the deciding vote. After this, it was announced that Greer had been chosen as vice president.

Melissa Daniel, Kara Goddard, Melissa Hardy and Cori Sutton made up the ballot for secretary. Hadry was not present for the meeting where the other three candidates listed their qualifications and spoke on why they should be chosen to the position of secretary.

Daniel ended up winning the position.

Three candidates ran for the final position of parliamentarian. Amber Becton, Melissa Hayes and LeAnn Quinn spoke on their qualifications and past leadership experience.

Quinn was the only candidate that had any real experience in parliamentary procedure and had ever held the position of parliamentarian in another organization.

The experience proved to be the deciding point as Quinn was elected to the position

Also discussed at the meeting was member comittee appointments, revision of the council’s by-laws and Homecoming.

The Freshman Council will be sponsoring a talent show during Homecoming. Committees were formed to plan the event.
