Foreign language film series begins

The Department. of Modern Languages has released their foreign language films for the spring semester.

The first in the series is the Portuguese film, Bossa Nova. The film will be shown at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24 in the Watkins Auditorium.

Love flows like music in this light-hearted film set in beautiful Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Bossa Nova weaves together a series of overlapping, amorous relationship.

Pedro, a suave attorney, courts Mary Ann, a widowed American language teacher who is also pursued by Accacio, a handsome soccer champion whose dual purpose in life is to chase women and publicity.

Meanwhile Pedro’s brother, Roberto, becomes enamored of Sharon, a feisty intern who manages to strike up a business relationship with the fast-moving Accacio, which soon turns personal and passionate.

And, finally, Nadine, Mary Ann’s friend and confidante draws Gary, a New York banker, so strongly into an Internet romance that he flies down to Rio to date her in person, only to be mistaken by Pedro as a rival for the affections of his beloved Mary Ann.

The talented Brazilian director, Bruno Barretto, ties all these strands together in an entertaining comedy of contemporary manners which paints an amusing, and realistic, portrait of the foibles of the human heart.

Amy Irving (Mary Ann) and Antonio Fagundes (Pedro) are featured in the leading roles. (Color, 98 minutes, 1983, in Portuguese with English subtitles.) Introduced by Prof. Lucia Florido (Portuguese).

All movies are open to the general public and will be shown at 7 p.m. in the Watkins Auditorium. All the films are in their original language with English subtitles.
