Football team has first spring practice under new coach

The University of Tennessee at Martin opened spring football practice this past Monday afternoon.

This was the first practice under new Skyhawk head footballcoach Matt Griffin.

Griffin, who was hired in December, served as an assistant coach at the University of Maine for the past four years. Griffin helped the University of Maine Black Bears to the Division I-AA playoffs where they lost in the second round to Georgia Southern.

Griffin said he is excited about the upcoming season and he's ready to see what the Skyhawks can accomplish on the field. The new head coach is promising Skyhawk fans an exciting brand of competitive football that features a wide-open offensive attack.

The Skyhawks have 29 consecutive days to get in the NCAA-mandated 15 practice opportunities, three of which must be in shorts.

The Skyhawks will generally practice Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturdays. Practice during the week begins at 4 p.m., while Saturday practices will begin at 9 a.m.

The Skyhawks will practice at 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 16 and at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 23. Practices are open to the public. Individuals, families and youth groups are welcome to attend. If you are in need of more information you can call Vickie Reynolds at (731) 587-7670.

Spring practice will conclude with the annual intra-squad game set for 7 p.m., Thursday, April 24 in the Hardy Graham Stadium. The spring game will include a 4 p.m. tailgate and cookout party with the Skyhawk staff and players.

All are welcome to join in the tailgate party.

Bob Carroll will serve as the guest head coach, while Don McCleary and Gary Doble serve as guest offensive and defensive coordinators.
