Football player cited for drugs in Browning Hall

UTM Football player, Brenton Ford, 18, of Madison Heights, Va., was charged with simple possession of marijuana on Sunday night, while in the Browning residence hall on campus.

Officer Cecil Clements and the duty resident assistant went to Ford’s dorm room after a complaint was made of possible marijuana use. When Ford opened his room door, the odor of what appeared to be marijuana was very strong and according to police reports Ford admitted to smoking marijuana in the room.

Ford gave Officer Clements permission to search the dorm. Clements recovered two butts of previously smoked marijuana cigarettes and six grams of marijuana in a plastic bag.

Ford entered a guilty plea on May 10 in Weakley County General Sessions Court. He was granted a pre-trial diversion, which will expunge the conviction from his record if he pays $850 in fines and court costs, spends four days in jail and completes a term of supervised probation for a period of 11 months 29 days. . Football Coach Matt Griffin says that he will take measures of punishment, as well.

“He violated team rules, and necessary actions will be taken to discipline him,” Griffin said.

Ford finished his first season last fall with the Skyhawks as a defensive end. He played in five games last season, tallying two tackles.
