The 2nd Annual Homecoming bonfire and firework display, in 11 years, took place at 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, near Pacer Pond.
The bonfire and fireworks display was a way for homecoming nominees to introduce themselves, speak to the student body and kick off Homecoming week with a celebration.
Joey Pierce, the Student Government Association (SGA) election commissoner, opened the stage for the homecoming queen candidates to present their speeches. Cathy Bennett, sponsored by the Baptist Collegiate Ministry, spoke first.
Renee` Bradley, sponsored by the Black Student Association, followed. Then, Rebecca Cain spoke to the crowd. Cain was sponsored by Chi Omega. Alpha Delta Pi sponsored Christine Robinson, who spoke after Cain. And Natalie Simmons spoke last, sponsored by Zeta Tau Alpha. Each candidate asked respectfully for the support of all the student body that was present.
Immediately after the contestants had given their speeches, SGA president, Eric Tolbert, thanked the students, faculty, staff and others for attending the event.
Before the homecoming queen candidates were introduced, the crowd was provided with an assortment of cajun cuisine as part of the Mardi Gras theme for the week. Musical entertainment was also provided. The event was sponsored by The Student Activities Council and SGA. The show was free and open to the public.
