First annual Skyhawk Experience hits Martin

The Skyhawk Experience, the University of Tennessee at Martin’s 2003 spring football game is set for Thursday, April 24 at Hardy M. Graham Stadium on campus.

The annual intrasquad game will be much more than just a game. Fans will have an opportunity to meet new head coach Matt Griffin and his staff, enjoy a tailgate party and cookout, have a chance to win a car and $5,000 in prizes in the field goal kick challenge. A dunking booth, live radio broadcast and a cookoff contest are also part of the experience.

Fans will have a chance to run the football obstacle course and run the 40-yard dash against their favorite Skyhawk player.

The cookout is free to all UT Martin students. Skyhawk fans can eat for $6, while children can eat for $3. The tailgate party and cookout gets under way at 4 p.m.

The spring game is set for 7 p.m. Bob Carroll will serve as the guest head coach, while Don McCleary serves as the guest offensive coordinator. Carroll was UT Martin’s head football coach from 1957-74. McCleary was the UT Martin head football coach from 1986-96. Gary Doble will be the guest defensive coordinator. Doble played for Carroll and was a member of the 1967 Tangerine Bowl team.

“We want everyone to come out and join the fun at The Skyhawk Experience,” said Matt Griffin, UT Martin’s new head football coach. “The Skyhawk Experience will give fans a great opportunity to meet the coaches and players, watch a little football, and most of all, have some fun.”

The Skyhawk Experience and spring game will mark the end of the Skyhawks’ spring practice schedule. The Skyhawks open the 2003 season at home against Austin Peay, Aug. 28. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
