Editorial: Pacer endorses Dean for SGA president

It’s not likely, but it could happen.

Maybe the students at UTM could believe the SGA has done something for them. Maybe the SGA could move beyond bills that only levy its internal dilemmas and focus more on its constituency.

Maybe tuition rates will decrease next year and the football team will have an undefeated season.

We don’t predict any of this to happen soon. But, we do believe that next week during student government elections, the students have an opportunity to take a step back or take a step forward.

We think the student body should carefully consider who they cast their vote for in the election for president of SGA. Most importantly, students need to realize that voting is a privilege that should be exercised in this country at every level, even if it is just student government. And, students need to see that the complaints of non-voters have no validity.

To us, the choice is clear. This campus needs a candidate who has proven they have what it takes to hold the office of president. We need a candidate who has the ability to lobby for students. We need a candidate who has goals of reshaping the direction of SGA and not turning it into a social organization.

And most importantly, the president of SGA should be someone who not only genuinely cares about student concerns but has the skills and willpower to turn concerns into resolve.

To this newspaper, the person running for president that is best suited for the job is Dusty Dean. The likelihood of the students at UTM actually having confidence in SGA’s ability to work for the students and to do great things for this campus is not likely.

But, with Dusty Dean as the next president we believe that it too, could happen.
