Dr. King speaks to SigEp on Sound Mind issues

On February 19, the brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon invited Dr. Andrew B. King, the Director of UTM Counseling and Career Services, to discuss common examples of distorted thinking or "cognitive traps" that many college students frequently experience.

"It is important to be familiar with these psychological traps as it is very common and often times difficult to recognize especially among college students," Dr. King said. He further added that such traps are quite possibly precarious in nature if not properly dealt with.

To supplement his discussion, Dr. King gave the brothers a handout with examples and general terms and explanations for each. He then asked the audience to read through the examples and think of someone whom they think any of these examples may apply. The brothers actively participated by relating these examples with past and current experiences they have had with family and friends.

"Hearing Dr. King speak brought to light the various fallacies our mind can fall into," says Brother Tucker Leigh, "Having better knowledge on the subject, perhaps we will be better able to support and aid our brothers and loved ones who may be or have been caught up in these cognitive traps."

Dr. Andrew B. King is a licensed psychologist and has a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Memphis and is currently the Director of UTM Counseling and Career Services. The seminar presented by Dr. King is one of many forums and discussions that the fraternity hosts to promote the further development of the sound mind aspect of the Balanced Man Program.
