Diverse panel addresses gender issues

Despite what one popular author might have led some people to believe, men are not from Venus and women are not from Mars. Each sex resides right here on Earth together whether they want to or not. Since the beginning of time men and women have had a difference of opinion on certain topics such as raising children, the workplace, and sex. The Black Student Association and the International Student Association decided to collaborate to get a panel of men from different backgrounds and ethnicities so students could pick the brain of the college male.

This discussion took place at 7 p.m. on Oct. 13 in Watkins Auditorium. As guests walked in they were asked to write down any questions they wanted to ask the panel. ISA president, Crystal Jones, thanked everyone for coming out and asked that the audience respect what the panel had to say.

Many of the questions that were asked dealt with what the men thought about women. For instance when asked, “What is the first thing that you notice about a woman?” some responses were, her mannerisms, character, physical beauty and her level of confidence.

Other questions that were asked were not as easy to answer, especially ones that dealt with sex. When asked, “Why do men think about sex so much?” responses included, Relationships are really about sex, conversation stimulates sex, animalistic instinct and peer pressure.”

Some questions addressed the character of men. When asked, “Why are all men dogs”, some responses included, Most men put themselves in this category voluntarily, all guys are not dogs, women are picking the wrong ones, that is stereotyping and it is not true and the question could use more clarification because there is a big difference between being a man and being a male.” Another question dealing with character was, “Why do men lie?” some responses were, It is a bad habit, to get something that they want and because they have been lied to.”

The responses to the question “Why do men try to have more than one girlfriend?” caused some members of the audience to squirm in their seats. “The woman doesn’t do what the man wants sexually, some men are just testing the waters, not ready to commit and the he might like some different things about different women.”

Discussions of relationships, family and morals continued throughout the night. Each male did not answer every question, but many of them did feel the same way about several topics.
