Deltas, Omegas stomp into first place

UTM students, alumni and the Martin community gathered to watch sororities and fraternities at the National Panhellenic Council’s Stompfest 2002, at 8 p.m Saturday, Oct. 12 in the Skyhawk Fieldhouse.

UTM participants included the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the ladies Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. the men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and the men of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. The men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, from UT Chattanooga also competed.

The Deltas beat out the Zetas, keeping their title as UTM’s NPHC Stompfest champions.

“We won our first step show as new editions to our sorority, after crossing over last spring. We had a title to defend because Deltas have always won the step shows at UTM,” said Calandria Ellison, junior and member of Delta Sigma Theta.

The Omegas won first place in the fraternity division and the Alphas, from UTC, took home second, while the men of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity placed third in the fraternity division, reliquishing their title as UTM’s NPHC Stompfest champions.

Rico Olden, senior and member of Omega Psi Phi, said that they put themselves in the judges position.

“We felt the judges would rather see style, enthusiasm, difficulty and percision, rather than people just up on stage dancing and doing skits,” added Olden.

The Deltas and Omegas received a $1000 check for placing first and the Zetas and Alphas received a $250 check for placing second.
