Dave Matthews in Martin?

Do you want to have a real concert in Martin?

The Student Activities Council is exploring the option of bringing Dave Matthews to Martin for an acoustic show in late March or early April.

Because of the lack of success of past concerts, the Office of Student Life wants to have a confirmation that students will turn out for the show.

So, a ticket drive is under way. By 5 p.m. Monday, 2,000 UTM students have to go by the Skyhawk Card Office and reserve a ticket in order for SAC to pursue the option of getting Dave Matthews.

As of 5 p.m., Thursday only 54 students had gone by to reserve a ticket.

In order for a decent concert to come Martin, a better student response is necessary.

“Here is how it works: Starting Thursday, November 21, through Monday, November 25, go by the Skyhawk Card Office (hours: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) in the University

Center with your Skyhawk Card. The card office staff will swipe your card into system. This will automatically charge your student account and will guarantee you your ticket if in fact Dave Matthews chooses to come to UT Martin. If he does not come, then your ticket purchase will be voided from your account and there will be no charges. If he does come, there will be no refunds," said Lia Jo Fisher, Chairman of the SAC, in an email earlier this week.

The SAC needs the commitment of the students in order to make an offer to Dave Matthews' management.

The show would not be one with the full band. It would be an acoustic show by Dave Matthews, probably similar to the tour he had four years ago with Tim Reynolds.

It was during that tour that Dave Matthews was last in the area. He played a sold out performance in Murray State's Lovett Auditorium in Jan. 1999.

This may be UTM's only chance to have a big-name concert this year and student have to turn out in the next couple of day's for it to even have a chance.

Again, students need to go by the Skyhawk Card Office and reserve a ticket for the concert. SAC needs 2,000 confirmed orders to even make an offer on the concert. The deadline is 5 p.m., Monday Nov. 25.
