Cross-dressing with SAC

At 7 p.m. last night in the UC Gameroom a different sort of karaoke competition was taking place. The Student Activities Council sponsored a cross dressing karaoke competition which was open to everyone.

The turnout for this event was not very big, but the enthusiasm in those who participated was great. The selections of music ranged from Patsy Cline’s "Crazy" to "Jaded" by Aerosmith.

There were a few participants that dressed as the opposite sex, but the majority of the students were just there to sing karaoke. There was one trick to the whole scheme though; the women performed songs by men and the men performed songs that were originally sung by women.

The first performer was Brad Hurt. He is a freshman Communications major from Memphis, Tenn. He sang the song "The Power of Love." His second song was "Building a Mystery" by Sarah McLachlan.

Chris Algea, a freshman from Shelby Forest, performed "Bitch" by Meredith Brooks.

"Summer Girls" by LFO was performed by Sheena Hickerson and Nikki Johnson. Sheena is a freshman Psychology major from Union City. Nikki is a freshman Criminal Justice major from Crockett County. They also performed "Father" by LL Cool J and "It’s Gonna Be Me" by N’ Sync. These two even choreographed their own dance moves and acts.

According to their Web site, the Student Activities Council is the primary provider of programming on the UTM campus. It is an organization made up of student volunteers and advisors that work hard to find things for students to do outside the classroom. They search for quality concerts, comedians, guest speakers, and many other forms of entertainment to offer the student body.

SAC welcomes all student suggestions and are happy to work with other student organizations to pursue their visions of student programming. Get involved with SAC today and watch the calendar to see what’s coming up next.
