Craig wins Maloan award

On Saturday, Elizabeth Craig was awarded the Beth Maloan Outstanding UTM Student Employee Award at the 42nd annual All-Sing.

This award was named in honor of Beth Maloan, UTM director of budgeting and payroll. She was an advocate of student employment and co-chaired a study group to enhance student employment.

Maloan lost her battle with cancer in April 2001 and the award was memorial to her and her work to strengthen student employment.

Craig, a sophomore International Business major with Spanish minor from Franklin, works in the Department of Public Safety. She is Night Supervisor Coordinator and has been working there for about a year.

She did dorm patrol before being promoted when the position came open. She was nominated by her boss, Lt. Ray Coleman, for this award.

“Elizabeth works for me as Night Supervisor Coordinator and does an outstanding job,” said Lt. Coleman. “I was aware of her extracurricular activities and school achievements. She has ALL the characteristics of an outstanding student employee.”

Lt. Coleman also stated that Craig is a good representative for Public Safety with the students and is a liaison with Housing. He considers her a high role model for other students to look up to.

Besides working as night supervisor coordinator for the Department of Public Safety, Craig is involved in many extracurriculars on campus.

She is the Procedures Chair for SGA, involved in SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise), chairperson for UTM/City of Martin relations committee, a staff writer for The Pacer and works with LEAD academy. She currently holds a 3.30 grade point average. In her almost non-existent free time, she likes to I love to read, write, and laugh, work one of her many projects or hang out with friends.

“I realize that this campus is small and everyone keeps saying that there is nothing to do, but there is always something to do,” said Craig.

“Just try some club or organization - you might not realize how much fun or what a difference you can make. On a campus this small everyone counts and everyone can make a difference if they just try. Something is out there for everyone, you just have to look for it.”

Her past jobs have included working in restaurants, furniture stores and animal shelters.

Upon finding out she was being presented with the Maloan Outstanding UTM Student Employee Award for Spring 2003, Craig was shocked because she wasn't expecting such an honor.

Craig was chosen because of her hard work and dedication to her duties. She supervises 25 student employees.

One of her many duties as Night Service Coordinator is to review and update the night supervisor and procedure manual and prepares the operating budget for the program.

Upon graduation in a couple of years, she hopes to find a job and work on her MBA part time while working.

Her advice to her peers is simple.

“If you aren't living your passion, then you're just doing time,” says Craig. “If you have to be here for 4 years or more, then why not make it worthwhile.”
