Coverage (or lack of) called shameful

While reading through the most recent edition of our school newspaper, I stumbled across coverage on the activities of a busy Friday night at a West Tennessee adult entertainment spot.

The article explained the events of the evening, wardrobe and all, and even included some photos of the evening.

“Never,” you say. “Not in our school paper.” Well, dear reader, such was the occurrence in the Features section of the Feb. 28 edition of The Pacer as an article reported the recent visit of the Chippendales to Martin.

I’ve always considered The Pacer a reliable source of information on campus news and events, but never could I imagine this depth and sort of coverage.

What need has any reader to know of the promiscuous activities of the “hot seat” or the wardrobe of G-strings and boxer briefs? These shameful, lustful acts should never be printed.

If the Pacer is dedicated to this sort of journalism, then it ought to send reporters to cover adult entertainment sites in Henry County every Friday night. Maybe The Pacer should also print a list of links to the best Internet pornography sites.

Despite the obvious moral degradation present in this coverage, what also bothers me is that if a fraternity were to bring women to dance, then there would be protests and demonstrations. The Pacer would not cover such an event with the positive coverage the Chippendales event received.

“But the Chippendales, they’re different, they’re men.” No, they are no different. Lust is lust. It is no more noble or evil for the Chippendales to come and dance for women here than it is for a woman to dance for men in Henry County.

What will come next for The Pacer? Will the next features section contain a report on a sorority’s “guys in boxers” night?

The wisest man to ever walk upon this Earth proclaimed that to think about committing adultery was equivalent to committing adultery. To look upon the private portions of another human being and desire for or imagine their capacities or abilities is detestable, abominable and devaluing to that human.

I am disgraced to be part of a university that devotes a portion of a public outlet of information to report and promote such activities.
