Comedian performs at 909

Gerry Dee flew in from Los Angles to close the SAC 909 Comedy Series.

Dee filled the Watkins Auditorium with laughter as he told hilarious stories about everyday humor. The Canada native brought his show to the states permanently when he moved to California in August.

He tours across America and Canada and is very popular on the college scene.

His road to the comedic profession is a unique story in itself.

After finishing college in seven years, Dee became a teacher. He taught physical education to middle and high school students.

He amused his students with his natural tendency to tell jokes.

His students dared him to enter a stand-up comic competition. Dee accepted the challenge and entered his first of many competitions. After being named “Toronto’s Funniest New Comic,” he knew that he had an opportunity that he could not resist.

Dee has the credentials of many famous comedians. He has won the same competitions as comedy greats Ellen Degenres, Dana Carvey and Sinbad. With seven years of teaching under his belt, Dee hit the comedy circuit with full force.

Dee’s life experiences as a teacher play a heavy influence on his performance. He told stories about every age from kindergarten and fifth grade to senior year.

From problem-solving to Italian nursery rhymes, Dee turned on some giggle boxes. The crowd was very amused with the tale of an annoying fifth grader named Billy and a devious game of dodge ball. Dee pointed out how lessons in karate did not necessarily prepare children for playground brawls.

Another interesting story was how he coped with Scottish parents while growing up in Canada.

His various stories of different accents overwhelmed the audience with laughter. He also discussed the many differences between American and Canadian sports.

Gerry Dee’s easy outlook on life and humorous twist of everyday living was highly entertaining.

“I thought that he was hysterical. His stories about students were the best. I think I was laughing louder than anyone,” said Kristy Henry, a senior Elementary Education major from Jackson.

Mostly recently Dee has performed on the Late, Late Show with Craig Kilborn and Star Search. His talents are not limited to the stage.

Dee also writes scripts for sitcoms. In May, Dee will have a reality show on CDS sports. Fans will soon be able to purchase his National Lampoon DVD.

Dee loves his career but still has aspirations to become a television star. He plans on auditioning for Saturday Night Live and Mad TV.

Do not be surprised if Dee becomes the next comedy standout.
