Chi O, Sigma win Line Dance competition

Greekfest 2004 events continued this week with the line dance competition at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Skyhawk Fieldhouse.

Three fraternities and six sororities competed for trophies at this event.

In the fraternity division, Phi Beta Sigma captured first place with their routine to Get it on the Floor. Alpha Tau Omega, who danced to Take it to Trial, took second place.

In the sorority division, Chi Omega won first place performing to Milkshake. Zeta Phi Beta, performing to Do It Like This, took second place.

Sigma Phi Epsilon also competed in the fraternity division. In the sorority division, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Omicron Pi, Delta Sigma Theta and Zeta Tau Alpha also competed.

“This event was exciting. There was so much energy and encouragement from the crowd,” said judge Anna Clark. The groups were judged in four areas: participation, rhythm, creativity and pride. The pride portion, which was worth the most points, was judged by crowd participation. All of the fraternities and the sororities had great participation from all of the crowd members, as well as the other groups.

Judges included Teresa Woody, librarian and graduate student; Dr. Desiree McCullough, professor of mathematics; Clark, professor of English; and Dr. Kathy Evans, professor of educational studies.

The judges said that they took this event very seriously and that the final decision was very difficult.

Greekfest events continue with Lip Sync on Friday at 7 p.m. and Steppin’ on Saturday at 7 p.m. Both events will take place in Skyhawk Fieldhouse. The admission for Lip Sync will be $1, while the admission for Steppin’ will be $8.

All proceeds from Greekfest events will go to the Alyssa Ray of Hope Campaign. Alyssa, daughter of a UTM alumni, suffers from autism. The money raised will be used for Alyssa’s therapy.
