Delta Sigma Theta, SAC sponsor vigil to remember victims of terror attacks


The Eta Xi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and the Student Activity Council (SAC) sponsored a candlelight vigil at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, on the UC patio.

There was a diverse number of students who came to remember the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001.

Veronica Moore, a senior Fashion Merchandising major from Memphis, and coordinator of the event, said it was needed and it was time for everyone to reflect on where they where a year ago and where they are today.

Dr. Katie High, vice chancellor of student affairs, gave words of encouragement as she read letters the from State Rep. John Tanner and President George W. Bush.

Herbert Wilkins Jr., a senior Religious Studies major from Lakeland, read a poem that dealt with the tragedy.

“I think that what happened a year ago has open our eyes to make us realize that we are all in this world together,” said Wilkins.

Abby Gambell, a senior Child and Family Studies major from Franklin, said the what happened on 9-11 has made her closer to her family and friends.

“It made me forget about petty things,” Gambell replied. The program also provided an opportunity for students to reflect on how there life was changed by the 9-11 and where they where she the first heard the the planes hit the World Trade Centers and the the Pentagon.

“I feel that it was a very good turn out knowing that it was a program earlier that day. The vigil was was extremely diverse,” said Moore.

“It is a program that should be implemented each year either by Delta Sigma Theta and SAC or other organizations. In the future, I hope that more organizations will join in the vigil so that it will be campus wide,” replied Moore.

“It was a good turn out and Delta Sigma Theta and SAC truly appreciates the support of the student body. We hope that students were able to remember the heroes of Sept. 11 and its victims,” said Delta president and senior marketing major from Martin, Patrice Boyd.
