Budgets make the most of Christmas shopping

Christmas (and the shopping that comes along with it), is anticipated by both retailers and children.

Not to say that the experience is not enjoyed by all, but for those of us on a budget, Christmas shopping can be a touch and go situation.

A few guidelines can be followed to make your dollar go far as you can make it, and give you the ability to buy as much as possible.

“To give is better than to receive” is the old saying people use when talking about gift giving, but for most Americans, capitalism is the only way and the tradition of exchanging gifts is a way of life.

The student looking to stretch his or her dollar around Christmas can use the old adage, “it is the thought that counts” to their advantage. First you must start budgeting in advance. Before you run out and buy thoughtless gifts, you should sit down and explore some options.

Retail stores are filled to their ceilings with potential gifts and with the economy at its present state, all large chain retailers and department stores will be holding special sales and offering discount coupons for most of their merchandise.

Staying on top of this is as easy as making a phone call. Store coupons are usually available upon request.

If a sale is not currently in progress, simply ask the sales clerk if and when a particular item will be on sale or when the next store wide sale may be taking place.

I am sure that the sales associate will be glad to provide you with such information.

While taking all of these things into consideration, you will be able to take advantage and fulfill your gift needs without paying full price.

Statistics show that retail sales have currently decreased by about 2 percent in comparison to last year, which was a bad year for retail, which shows a growing trend toward more conservative spending.

Manufactures are taking notice and are opening their own stores.

Wholesale shopping centers or outlet malls are springing up all over the country, so why pay retail when you can buy wholesale? Outlet malls eliminate costs by cutting out the middleman.

The stores are separated by name brand manufactures and they offer all the same great gifts at prices as low or lower than those included within the retail store. This provides the perfect setting for shoppers on a tight budget.

Outlet malls may not be located in everyone’s immediate area, but it is definitely worth the drive when you consider the selection and savings.

So just remember, before you go out and spend a fortune on gifts, shop around.

You will be glad that you did in the long run.

Who knows, when it is all said and done, you may have money left over to purchase something for yourself!
