BSA presents twice the fun with auction, toga party

College students do know how to have fun and raise money too, as seen in last week’s Black Student Association (BSA) events: Chocolate City and the Toga party.

Last Thursday, BSA presented Chocolate City in the UC Ballroom from 8-10 p.m.

To people who are not aware of Chocolate City, it is an auction with male and female members of BSA students who want to participate.

“I just wanted to get involved and show my appreciation to BSA, for having an organization that works around the needs and wants of African-American students here on campus,” said Johnniecia Lee, a junior Marketing major from Memphis.

Although the rain was pouring down, UTM students came out to support the organization.

“I came out to show support to the students within the show and give my support to BSA,” said Marcus Glass, a senior Marketing major, from Covington.

The MC’s for the event were Reggie Walker, a junior Communications major, from Memphis, and Najir Matthews, a senior Fashion Merchandising major, from Memphis.

Bids for the night started at one dollar. The highest bid for the night was $37 for a three-for-one special. The bid was for three young ladies who came out dancing for the crowd and brought energy to the audience.

The next to highest bid was $30. This bid was a two-for-one special.

The guys bidded on are known around campus as ‘The Crew.’ The young lady who placed the winning bid was Toni Warren, a junior Biology major, from Memphis.

BSA raised $274 from bids alone, not including admission price to the event.

Following this event on Friday was a toga party. There was a $25 prize to one male and one female with the best toga. The winners were Della Rogers, a sophomore Biology major from Memphis, and Taft Bradely, a freshman Graphic Design major from Memphis.

“We just wanted to do something different instead of just throwing a party. We wanted to do a theme party. We want students to get involved and become members of the organization. So we are trying to have more events to bring forth more members,” said Raymonn Moore, BSA president.

All money raised from both events will be used to promote more events sponsored by BSA.
