Browder, Hinson pick up first two Audie Murphy awards from UTM ROTC Dept.

For the second consecutive year, the UTM ROTC department will present a weekly Audie Murphy Award.

The award will go to the football player who best represents his school, his team and who went above the call of duty in either the last football game on during the week of practice. The first week's Audie Murphy Award was presented to freshman Bart Browder, a 5-9. 160-Pound quarterback from Selmer.

Browder earned the award based on his effort as the scout team quarterback during practice for the season opener against Southwest Baptist University.

This week's award was presented Wednesday afternoon to freshman Brett Hinson, a 5-10, 160-pound cornerback from Hohenwald.

Lt. Col. Eric Ashworth has presented the award each week during the team's Wednesday meeting.

"One of the most famous Medal of Honor recipients in World War II was Audie Murphy, so the ROTC department wants to present the Sergeant Audie Murphy Award to the football player who best represents the spirit of Audie Murphy.

"Many of the football players might be thinking there is nothing special in themselves, but I told them Audie Murphy believed in himself, cared about his fellow man, and did the best in everything he did," Ashworth said.

"I am confident that there is some Audie Murphy in each and everyone of the Skyhawk football players."

Audie Murphy was a country boy, from Kingston, Texas, who was 5-5 and weighted 110 pounds when he joined the Army in 1942.

He was rejected on his military application twice before the infantry accepted him.

However, he wanted to serve his country and he was willing to do what it took to meet his goal.

Murphy worked his way up the ranks from private to first lieutenant and was involved in nine campaigns from North Africa, Italy and Southern France.

He was the most decorated soldier in World War II, and a recipient of the Medal of Honor.

He later went on to become a movie star where he starred in 44 films.
