Boyd surprised when made honorary member of state senate

Debrasha Patrice Boyd, 22, was made an honorary member of the Tennessee state senate by Rep. Thelma Harper, District 19, Davidson County at a recent sorority event.

Boyd and Harper, both members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., attended the sorority’s state cluster. Harper surprised Boyd and a room filled with more than 200 members when she presented a framed certificate and state seal to Boyd.

Boyd received the honor because of her hard work and efforts throughout the state.

“Debrasha has been a great leader to the sorority and to the state of Tennessee,” said Harper. Harper informed Boyd that she has the same privileges as elected senate members.

“I want you to tell us what we need to do,” Harper told Boyd. Boyd accepted the presentation with a humble and surprising smile.

“I was startled and amazed when Soror Harper presented me with such an honor. I feel as though I was not the only one to be presented with the presentation, my chapter was honored also,” replied Boyd.

Boyd added that the she hopes that this will show that students at UTM are doing more to help the community and state.

Boyd is Eta Xi chapter president at the University of Tennessee at Martin and Tennessee state facilitator for the sorority.

She is a senior Marketing major from Martin, with a 4.0 grade point average.
