Berg’s recital evokes emotions

With the sweet sound of vocal music, Heidi Berg performed for her friends, family and fellow students during her senior voice recital on Sunday, Oct. 13.

Berg sang many pieces that she has performed during her undergraduate years in music.

Although many of her musical selections were non-English, she finished her recital with Far From the Home I Love, from Fiddler on the Roof by Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Brock.

“I am proud of Heidi,” said Amy Hutcherson, a senior Music Education major from Fairview. “She’s shown a lot of improvement over the past years. She did a great job!”

According to Berg, she chose music as a major because she’s always loved to sing.

When asked about her feelings before the recital, Berg replied, “Surprisingly, I wasn’t too nervous, until I walked on the stage. I knew my music well, so I knew that I could get through it.”

Berg has a very sweet and gentle soprano. The recital was very entertaining and also an emotional one for Berg.

With her parents, fiance and friends watching her recital, Berg was nervous about her performance.

The last piece of her recital, Far From the Home I Love, was a great piece for her. She did get a bit emotional, but she finished her piece with great applause from the audience.

Far From the Home I Love is found in the second act. It is sang by Hodel as she is preparing to leave her family to be with her husband to be who is in prison in Siberia.

“My favorite piece was Hai luli,” said Berg. “Both my accompanist and I loved working on it. It’s such a passionate piece. However, I also enjoyed Il regardait mon boquet because it’s a fun little story piece.”

Although Berg claims that she isn’t a performer and hates being in front of a group of people, she did an astounding job.

A marvelous voice coming from such a small person.

Berg offers advice for her fellow music majors with upcoming senior recitals: “Be very prepared beforehand, be confident in your knowledge of the pieces and DON’T CATCH A COLD!”
