Baseball wins 9-8 over Martin Methodist


The UTM baseball team rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 9-8, come-from-behind victory over visiting Martin Methodist College Monday afternoon at Skyhawk Field.

The Skyhawks improve to 5-9 on the season and will return to action Wednesday, March 19 when they travel to Saint Louis University for a 2 p.m. contest.

Loren Turner hit his second home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh inning and freshman Luke Parham scored on a passed ball to put the Skyhawks up 9-8.

Turner, the Skyhawks' senior designated hitter from Kingston Springs, Tenn., went 3-for-4 against Martin Methodist. He also scored two runs in the game. With his effort against Martin Methodist, Turner now sports a .379 batting average.

The Skyhawks claimed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Adam Salter drove in two runs with a single to center field. Brady Nighswonger, who reached base with a double and extended his hitting streak to 10 games, scored.

Brian Jordan, who reached base via a walk, also scored on Salter's double.

Senior Kelly Davis also homered for the Skyhawks in the game.

Davis was 2-for-4 at the plate and he scored once and had an RBI. Davis, from Princeton, Ky., improved his batting average to .378 on the year.

Martin Methodist scored three runs in the top of the third and four runs in the top of the sixth to take a 8-7 lead.

Dustin Summers silenced the Martin Methodist bats in the late innings and earned his first win of the season. Summers pitched three innings and allowed one hit. He struck out two of the nine hitters he faced.
