Baseball team wins 2, loses 2


The Skyhawk baseball team went two and two last week, picking up wins against the Ohio Valley conference members Eastern Kentucky University and the Harding University Bisons. The first game of the series found the Skyhawks coming out on top, 3-4 against the Colonels.

Despite being outhit by six, UTM capitalized on their eight hits, scoring all four runs in the third inning.

Freshman pitcher Ben Meador racked up his third win of the season, striking out seven over eight innings. Freshman Adam Ledlow also picked up his third save.

On the offensive side of the plate, Senior Bryant Jones had three hits during the game and Junior Brian Berryman went two for four with the Skyhawks only RBI.

The second game found the Skyhawks once again being outhit by the Colonels, but coming out on the losing end this time, 6-1.

Sophomore Scott Massey recorded his first loss of the season, giving up seven hits and five runs, two of which were earned.

Sophomore Micky Dobson and Senior Jarrad Robinson also saw action on the day, giving up a combined six hits and one run.

Senior Adam Salter went two for three at the plate while sophomore Brett Spivy knocked in the only run, bringing in senior Hunter Hart who reached base on a walk.

The Skyhawks dropped the final game of the series to the Colonels, 20-4.

The Colonels put a whopping 22 hits on the board, facing four Skyhawk pitchers: Sophomore Justin Bryant, Junior Dustin Summers, Ledlow and Robinson.

Berryman and Junior Nick Bruner both went two for four at the plate and Freshman Nick Luper scored two of the Skyhawks four runs.

The Skyhawks rebounded from the EKU series with a 13-4 win against the Bison of Harding University.

Sophomore Casey Estill scattered six hits over seven innings and struck out four, picking up his first win of the season. Estill lowered his ERA from 10.38 to 8.55

Offensively, the Skyhawks shined with three doubles coming from Spivy, Bruner, and Freshman Douglas Nicodemus; three triples from Salter, Jones, and Spivy, and three home runs from Hart, Nicodemus, and Sophomore Mike Fabrizio.

The two wins and two losses put the Skyhawks record at 9-17 overall and 3-3 in the OVC.

The Skyhawks return to conference action Friday in a doubleheader and a single Saturday game at Morehead State University.

The Eagles are 6-20 on the year overall, with a 0-6 record in the conference.

The first pitch of the series will come at 2:00 p.m. in Morehead, Ky.
