Baseball team looking for ‘Diamond Girls’

UTM is searching for Diamond Girls to work with the Skyhawk baseball team this spring. An informational meeting for all those interested in becoming Diamond Girls is set for 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 17 in Room 2060 of the Skyhawk Fieldhouse.

“This past year we had the Chi Omega Sorority help us and they received community service hours for their effort,” said David Hogue, Skyhawk assistant baseball coach. “We saw that the concept would work, but not with an entire sorority.” Hogue said the ideal number of Diamond Girls is 16, but he encourages everyone interested in participating to attend the informational meeting.

“We want to have six or eight girls staff each home game for us,” Hogue said. “They will serve as bat girls, ball girls, work the concession stand and help wherever needed throughout the games.”

As an incentive Hogue has cleared it with administrators to offer college credit equal to that of a physical education activity course to those who are selected to be Diamond Girls. Hogue said all Diamond Girls will be issued wind suits and T-Shirts as well. A current fund-raising project was designed to fund the uniforms and other needs of the team.

“We want to have a first-class operation and we want the Diamond Girls to look and act like professionals,” Hogue said.

Hogue said the Diamond Girls will also help get the UTM student body involved with the baseball program and expand the current fan base.

The Skyhawks will play 38 games at home this spring. The current schedule indicates the Skyhawks will play 29 games at home, including the first eight weekends of the season.

The Skyhawks will open the season at noon Feb. 8 with a doubleheader against visiting Western Illinois.
