Baseball team defeats Christian Brothers


Senior Loren Turner doubled down the right field line to drive in three runs and lead the UTM Skyhawks to a 5-2 win over visiting Christian Brothers University Tuesday afternoon at Skyhawk Field.

The Skyhawks improve to 11-12-1 overall, while Christian Brothers falls to 9-24.

Turner, who has been the Skyhawks' designated hitter for most of the season, started at third base against Christian Brothers. With the three RBI, he now has 21, and is third on the team in RBI.

The Skyhawks enjoyed 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Kayo Anderson drove in Turner who reached on a fielder's choice.

Turner upped the Skyhawks' lead to 4-0 with his double in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Skyhawks tacked on one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Brian Jordan singled to left field to score Brady Nighswonger.

The Skyhawks racked up 10 hits against three Christian Brothers pitchers. Nighswonger went two-for-three in the game, while Jordan went two-for-five.

Three Skyhawk pitchers worked the nine-inning contest. Freshman Scott Massey made the start and pitched four solid innings.

He gave up two hits and struck out one. Freshman Justin Bryant pitched 3.2 innings and earned the win. Bryant, who hails from Clarksville, is now 3-0 on the season and he sports a 4.25 ERA. He scattered five hits and gave up two earned runs.

Dustin Summers, a sophomore from Paris, Tenn., made his 14th appearance of the year, and picked up his first save of the season.

Christian Brothers was led by Hunter Crosby, Wes Hoover and Angelo Lucchesi.

All three had two hits each. Chad Lopes suffered his seventh loss of the season.

He gave up four runs and six hits in 2.1 innings of work. Shawn Morgan closed out the game for Christian Brothers. He pitched 3.2 innings, gave up one run and three hits, while striking out five.
