Baseball picks up two OVC victories, out-hits Hilltoppers


The Skyhawk baseball team picked up their first Ohio Valley Conference wins last weekend against Eastern Illinois University.

UTM won the first game of Saturday’s double header, 8-3, with Freshman Ben Meador picking up the win. Meador gave up three earned runs and struck out seven over seven innings.

Junior Hunter Hart was four-for-five at the plate, scoring two runs with one RBI.

Seniors Adam Salter and Kayo Anderson, and Sophomore Brett Spivey accounted for six, two a piece, of the Skyhawks 15 hits.

With only three hits, the Skyhawks fell to the Panthers in the second game, 5-1.

Justin Bryant was credited with the lost, giving up 10 hits and four runs over three innings.

Rebounding from the loss, the Skyhawks came out swinging on Sunday with 13 hits, taking down EIU, 8-4.

Getting the win for the Skyhawks was Sophomore Scott Massey.

Massey gave up seven hits, three earned runs, and struck out five over seven innings.

Adam Ledlow grabbed the save, pitching 1.2 innings.

Salter once again excelled at the plate, going three for four.. He hit .416 against EIU over the series, with two RBI, scored three runs and stole two bases.

Despite racking up 11 hits against Western Kentucky University, the Skyhawks were defeated by the Hilltoppers Wednesday night, 7-11.

Hart drove in the first run of the game, scoring Freshman Douglas Nicodemus with a single to center in the third inning.

The Skyhawks capitalized on two WKU errors in the fourth, collecting two hits and three runs, putting the score at 4-3.

The Hilltoppers rallied in the bottom half of the inning and scored two runs to regain the lead.

The Skyhawks added one run in the seventh and two in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough to match WKU’s one in the sixth, three in the seventh, and two in the eighth.

Seniors Bryant Jones, Salter and Anderson, and Junior Bryan Berryman each added two hits to the total.

Sophomore Casey Estill was charged with the mound loss, giving up five runs, four of them earned, over three innings. Senior Jarrad Robinson also gave up four runs over three innings.

The loss brings the Skyhawk’s record to 7-15 over all and are 2-1 in the OVC.

UTM returns to Conference play this weekend, hosting the Eastern Kentucky Colonels who are 17-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

The three game series will start with two seven inning games Saturday at noon and a single nine inning game Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

UTM will then host the Harding University Bisons, Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
