Baseball picks up single win in non-OVC play over break


  • Host Arkansas-Little Rock scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break open a 1-1 ballgame and turn back the UTM baseball team, 5-2. Three of the four runs UALR picked up were charged to Skyhawk reliever Chadwick Cameron.

The Skyhawks threatened in the top of the ninth, scoring Chad Green, but that was all the Skyhawks could muster. Adam Ledlow was charged with the pitching loss. He worked seven and one-third innings and scattered six hits and two walks. He gave up two runs and struck out five.

  • Junior Douglas Nicodemus had a single and a double and drove in four runs in the first game of a twinbill against UALR, but it wasn't enough to help the Skyhawks find a win. Arkansas-Little Rock piled up 14 hits en route to a 12-7 victory over the Skyhawks who had nine hits. Jacob Smothers suffered the mound loss in the game, giving up six runs on five hits in one inning.

  • The Skyhawks dropped the second game of the doubleheader to the host Trojans, 5-4. The Skyhawks led 3-1 after the first three innings, but UALR scored twice in the eighth and once in the ninth for the victory. UALR had 10 hits in the game, while the Skyhawks managed eight hits.

Kevin Holt went 3-for-4 at the dish with two runs scored. Luper and Jason Hockaday drove in runs. Ryan Rockholt pitched seven strong innings for the Skyhawks. He gave up nine hits and four runs, but he struck out five.

  • The Skyhawks scored one run in the top of the ninth inning and claimed a 4-3 victory over host Belmont University at Greer Stadium in Nashville. In the top of the ninth the Skyhawks answered with the go-ahead run.

Lance Renton reached on an error and moved to second on a single by Hockaday. Renton went to third when Nicodemus singled to center. Renton scored on Chad Green's single to center.

Senior Micky Dobson picked up his first mound win of the season. He pitched two and two-thirds innings and allowed one hit. He struck out two. Smothers made the start for the Skyhawks. He pitched 6 and one-third innings and allowed eight hits, three runs and four walks. He struck out two. Eric Walker closed out the game for the Skyhawks. He pitched 2.1 innings, gave up two hits and struck out two.

  • The UTM baseball team once again found itself in a one-run ballgame with a chance to make something happen in the last inning. The Skyhawks led host Middle Tennessee 11-10 going into the bottom of the ninth inning at Reese Smith Field and were three outs away from winning their sixth one-run game of the season. However, MTSU put together three hits and took advantage of a wild pitch to tie the game at 11-all.

The Blue Raiders won the game in the bottom of the tenth inning, 12-11, with two hits and one run. The Skyhawks put two runs up in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-4 advantage. The Skyhawks had 13 hits in the game, Nicodemus went 3-for-4 with five RBI, while Hockaday went 3-for-5 and scored four runs. Turner was 1-for-2 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored. Renton and Zach Dean also had two hits each in the game. Dobson was tagged for the mound loss for the Skyhawks. The lefty pitched three innings and gave up seven hits and three runs.

UTM is now 5-13 on the season. The Skyhawks' game scheduled for Tuesday afternoon against the St. Louis Billikens in St. Louis, Mo. was cancelled due to weather. As of press time, the game had not been rescheduled.

The team now looks ahead to OVC play on Saturday against SEMO in Martin at noon.
