Austin Peay knocks off Skyhawks 73-58 in round two


Regular-season champion and top seed Austin Peay rolled past No. 4 Tennessee-Martin, 73-58, in OVC Women's Basketball Tournament semifinal action Friday afternoon at the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville, Tenn. With the win, the Lady Govs advance to Saturday's championship game against the winner of the Southeast Missouri-Tennessee Tech contest.

The Lady Govs jumped out to a 16-point halftime lead (37-21) and never looked back as they tied an OVC record for consecutive wins at 21. Austin Peay shot 48.2 percent from the field, including going 8-of-18 from 3-point range. The Skyhawks converted just one of 11 trey attempts and finished with a 44.4 percent field effort overall. On the boards, UTM held a 39-26 advantage.

Paige Smith went 6-of-9 from 3-point range (6-of-10 overall) and grabbed four steals as she led APSU with 19 points. Brooke Armistead also hit 60 percent of her floor shots with four free throws to follow with 17. Gerlonda Hardin grabbed a team-high seven rebounds while adding 13 points.

Danielle Page and Tiffany Brundige paced the Skyhawks with 11 points apiece while Amy Watson registered a double-double, grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds to go with 10 points.

The Lady Govs, who will be playing in the tournament championship for the fourth consecutive year, now await the winner of Friday's second semifinal contest between No. 2 Southeast Missouri and No. 6 Tennessee Tech. Tennessee-Martin finishes the season with a 13-16 record.
