Arkansas-Little Rock spoil women's season opener


The University of Arkansas-Little Rock (1-0) made 10 consecutive free throws in the final 1:11 of Friday night's women's basketball game to hand UTM a 68-56 season-opening setback.

The host Trojans made 22-of-27 free throws in the game and relied on 24 points from junior forward Alicia Cash.

The Skyhawks had several leads in the second half, but were consistently whistled for fouls throughout the contest.

The Skyhawks committed 25 personal fouls, while the Trojans only committed 15 fouls.

The game was tied eight times and the lead changed hands seven times.

Julie Young, who sat out all but two minutes of the first half, scored 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds in the second half of the game.

Freshman Deina Willingham was the only other Skyhawk in double digits, and she had 10 points.

UALR claimed a two-point lead, 28-26, at the half when Cash scored in the paint with one second left on the clock.

In the first half both teams struggled with their offenses. A total of 17 fouls were called in the first half. UTM was whistled for eight personal fouls, while UALR was called for nine.

Young was forced to the bench in the first two minutes of the game as she picked up two personal fouls for blocking.

Andreika Jackson was the only Skyhawk able to score in the paint in the first half. She pumped in six points, while Willingham added six first-half points. Jackson finished the game with eight points.

The Skyhawks darted out to an early lead with three-pointers from Jenny Lannom, Tiffany Brundige and Torre Thomas. The Skyhawks finished the contest hitting only 4-of-18 from three-point range.

UALR was led by Cash and Humphrey with eight points each in the first half.
