Argument at ATO house leads to arrest of “unwanted” visitor

Stormy Rainey, 22, of Bon Aqua, Tenn., was arrested Saturday night on charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct after an altercation with members of Alpha Tau Omega during a private party at the ATO house.

Stormy Rainey and his brother Joseph, 20, told police that they and some friends had gone to the ATO house on the assumption that a party was being held there. Upon arriving at the house, the Raineys said, members of the fraternity attacked them.

The Raineys could not identify any specific members involved in the alleged attack, police said. The responding officer observed that Stormy Rainey had an injury to the back of the head.

According to the police report, when the responding officer turned around to observe the subjects, who were still in the ATO front yard, Stormy Rainey then ran across the street and struck ATO member Brent Simpson of Jackson in the face.

The responding officer then restrained Stormy Rainey, at which time he smelled alcohol on his breath and noticed that his speech was slurred. Rainey was then placed under arrest and held at the Weakley County sheriff's office.

Simpson told police he did not want to press assault charges against Stormy Rainey. The Pacer contacted ATO adviser Chris Crockett, who said that nobody was "jumped," and that the unwanted visitors never made it into the ATO house. Rather, the visitors were stopped at the door and politely asked to leave two times.

"They were asked nicely to leave twice. Then they were told to leave," Crockett said. "One of them (Stormy Rainey) said to make him leave. Then Big Luke (ATO member Luke McMann) pushed him out the door. Everything proceeded from there. There was a fight, but the fight was provoked," Crockett said. Crockett added that even he would not argue with "Big Luke."

"There was a party, but it was a chapter party," Crockett explained. "You couldn't be there unless you were an ATO or dating an ATO."
